![]() | Angeline Lau | Angeline was 8 years old living in Huntington Beach, CA. She was diagnosed with AML. Her cancer was controlled well for a while with medication, but then she started her search for a donor. This January, Angeline has found her donor and has received marrow. Her donor had wanted to send her good wishes and luck in recovering. Unfortunately, Angeline was very weak and she had passed away. Her memory is still alive in those who new her. And although she did not survive, she at least had the chance at living a longer life. |
![]() | Barry Foon | In 2004 , Barry Foon was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma – a blood cancer. In an attempt to bring him into remission, he underwent at least 4 rounds of chemotherapy at Stanford. In November 2006, doctors told Barry and his family that his best chance for long-term remission was through a bone marrow transplant. His brothers were not a match. Barry found an unrelated match in February 2007 but was unable to receive his transplant. Barry passed away in April 2007 surrounded by his family. |
![]() | Barry Pham | Barry was diagnosed with acute biphenotyic leukemia and found early 2010 and received his cord blood transplant. Barry was one tough little guy, fighting each day to live. Barry Quinn Pham passed away at around 1:10am on Thursday August 5th, 2010 at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital after a long and valiant battle with leukemia. | Benedict Yen | Ben Yen (55) was born in Taiwan. He is diagnosed with Myelodysplasia recently. Ben is a professor of pathology at the University of California, San Francisco, and the chief of pathology at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. His clinical expertise is in renal pathology and ultrastructural pathlogy. His research lab studies viral hepatitis, especially hepatitis B, which disproportionately affects American minorities, including Asian Americans. Outside of work, he enjoys travelling, wine, and music. He has also been involved in defending the civil liberties of Asian Americans. | |
![]() | Bevin Varughese | Bevin Varughese was diagnosed with ALL(Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) in January 2004. He has been undergoing treatment since January 2004 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Bevin won the fight and was in remission from April 2004. ![]() | Bonnie Wong | Bonnie was a 26-year old San Francisco native who was diagnosed with Leukemia. She is one of the most cheerful people you could meet, and is always ready to give a helping hand. After months of searching Bonnie found a potential match from a donor in China. Bonnie received her transplant in April. Unfortunately, she relapsed a month after her transplant and passed away on May 17, 2008. She'll always be remembered. |
![]() | Bryon Strunk | In 1998, Bryon married the love of his life. A year later he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. For five years, he and his wife courageously battled this disease. Bryon and his wife Frances founded the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Lymphoma Research Foundation to help those affected by this devastating disease. However, because Bryon was Japanese-Caucasian, his chance of finding a matching donor proved to be a very difficult task. In September 2004, at the age of 37, Bryon peacefully passed away. Bryon will always remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. |
![]() | Chris Cai | Chris was an incredible person. Not only was he an extremely talented doctor, but he was a loving husband and the father of a 10 month old son. Adored by his wife, Chris cherished his family dearly. Born in Shanghai, Chris immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 13, and he eventually paid his own way through college and medical school. Chris was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome as a resident, and he worked as a full time neurosurgeon to the day he was hospitalized. In addition to medicine, Chris loved music and the outdoors. Chris bravely passed away on June 15, 2004 surrounded by the love of his family and friends. |

| Denise Hui | Denise (35) is an intelligent and ambitious pharmacologist who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000. She enjoys traveling and music. In November 2007, Denise was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome / Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (MDS/AML). Denise received her transplant and was doing well, unfortunately passed away in January 2010. | |

On May 6, 2007, Elyse was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) an extremely rare blood disease that effects one out of a million people. Her life along the lives of her parents, family members, and friends changed when doctors diagnosed her with the HLH disease. | Emily Cai | My name is Emily. I have 3 kids. Five years ago, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and I have already had two transplants. The first transplant was a self transplant, but I relapsed after 9 months. The second time around, I went through chemotherapy but couldn’t find a donor to match me. So I went ahead and had a cord-blood transplant. It has been three years since my cord-blood transplant and my body is weakened again. This time around I really need to find a matching donor in order to survive. My youngest son is only six. I cannot imagine my children without their mother. Every time I am in the hospital, they always call and ask when I will be coming home. They need me, and they have been through so much already. I want to live, to live for my children. A matching donor is my last chance for survival. Please help me… Update: Emily passed away early August 2010 in peace, but too sudden for her family. ![]() | Erica Murray | In 2006, 28-year-old Erica Murray was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She had studied abroad in Paris, visited over 25 countries, and spent a year teaching English in Tokyo. With a bright future ahead of her in the international arena, her leukemia changed her active lifestyle. Because Erica was both Chinese and Caucasian, her tissue type was especially difficult to match. Despite undergoing a stem cell transplant from an unrelated match in April of 2008, Erica passed away on December 4th, 2008. She will be greatly missed. |
![]() | Geary Moya | In December 2005, Geary Moya was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Geary had a passion for fishing, boating, and traveling. He lived with his wife, Nadine, and was an avid church member at the Apostolic Church in Union City. By definition, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma's is any of a large group of cancers of the immune system. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can occur at any age and is often marked by enlarged lymph nodes, fever, and weight loss. There are many different types of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, which can be divided into aggressive (fast-growing) and indolent (slow-growing) types, and they can be classified as either B-cell or T-cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. ![]() | Glory Hom | Glory Hom was the only child of Reverend and Mrs. Roycos Hom of the Overseas Chinese Mission Church in NYC and a straight-A student at Wellesley College in Boston, MA. Glory was diagnosed with Acute Myloblastic Leukemia (AML) in March of 2005. Just a few years earlier, she had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had a small tumor removed from her leg. Glory was a She found a cord blood match and received a transplant. Glory was recovering from her transplant when her leukemia relapsed. She passed away in September of 2007. |
![]() | Gurdeep Bedi | Gurdeep passed away peacefully in January 2005, surrounded by his parents in the ICU of the Seattle Children's Hospital. He fought bravely and relentlessly with his Leukemia for one year and 15 days. Gurdeep loved to play sports and read stories. He was so courageous and even though a perfect match was found for him, he was never able to receive his transplant. He is greatly missed and remembered by all who loved him. |
| Hang Nguyen | Hang Nguyen (Vietnamese) is a beautiful 33 year old woman that came from Vietnam about 9 years ago. She has two adorable sons (6 and 4) and she lives with her husband Tai in Michigan. Just 4 months ago, she had a mouth blister that refused to heal. After doctors ran some tests they discovered that she had Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She immediately began chemotherapy treatment, but after her first round the cancer was still there. A stronger dose during the 2nd round put her in remission, but her cancer came back just 2 months later. Hang received a cord blood transplant in early 2008. Unfortunately, she relapsed a month later and passed away in late July 2008. | |
![]() | Harrison Leonardo | Harrison at a young 2 years old was diagnosed with Acute Mylogenous Leukemia early May 2006. After going through a round of chemotherapy, his cancer relapsed in November 2006. Harrison is half Filipino and half Caucasian. In April 2007, Harrison received a mismatched cord blood tranplant. Unfortunately, he recently passed away in the loving embrace of his family due to complications after his cord blood tranpslant. ![]() | Ja Lih Lee | Ja Lih Lee was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in December 2008. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Library Science at Taiwan University and her Master's degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She worked for the libraries of San Jose and Oakland. In August 2007, she became the Community Librarian for Cupertino. AADP worked closely Ja Lih and with Cupertino Library to recruit and raise awareness in the importance of becoming a potential marrow/stem cell donor. Ja Lih found a match and received a marrow/stem cell transplant in July 2009. Unfortunately,she passed away in Deceber 2009 due to complications. |
| Jennifer Juanes | Jennifer Juanes was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) on September 2006 at the age of 20. She relapsed in August 2009 with the same diagnosis. Jennifer was an amazing young woman. She was born and raised in Sunnyvale, CA, and graduated from Fremont High School in 2004. She grew up playing softball and made every All-Star team. She was also an All-League Selection during high school. Jen loved makeup, shopping, and being with her family and friends. Jen aspired to become a makeup artist but had a rough road battling cancer. She was a feisty, lovable, smart, and insanely funny person. She had the heart of a tiger and has remained relentless through rain and shine. Jennifer was Filipino, Spanish, and English. Jennifer successfully received a transplant in January 2010, but due to complications she passed away in May. She fought a long and hard battle, she will be dearly missed. | |

After his transplant, they were hoping his cancer would be brought into remission. Jian passed away in early summer of 2005. |

He was borin in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and was named as one of the Top Family Doctors in the U.S. by the Consumers' Research Council of America. He passed away from a relapse of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia on March 5, 2005. Although a bone marrow transplant was ultimately not able to cure John, he fought a brave battle. |

Justice, a Guamanian native, had been battling T-Cell Lymphoma for the past 7 months. She is a special and courageous girl that inspired many people within the community, both here and in Guam, to come together and bring about the first ever marrow/stem cell donor registration drives in Guam last Feb. 1-3. |

However, her diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia hindered her studies. Although Kaitlin found a donor in late 2009, she passed away in January of 2010. |

After going into remission for 2 years, Megha returned to India after graduate school in Kansas. Even after a possible donor match was found in Australia, her Leukemia had aggressively relapsed despite a brave battle. She passed away peacefully on September 6, 2004. |
![]() | Michelle Maykin | Michelle Maykin was of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai descent. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in February 2007. In response to Michelle's diagnosis, her network of friends and family created 'Project Michelle'. Project Michelle volunteers did everything in their power to assist Michelle in her quest to find a bone marrow/stem cell match. Project Michelle volunteers recruited feverishly throughout the Bay Area, eventually reigstering over 18,000 people! After months of searching, Michelle received a cord blood transplant in November 2008. Unfortunately, Michelle's cancer returned, and after a few months of pursuing alternative treatments, Michelle passed away on July 2009. | MinFei | Min-Fei was a 40-year-old mother with two 7-year-old twins, Alice and Bella. Min-Fei was diagnosed with AML in early 2008. She had an autologous transplant in March 2009, but relapsed that June. Min-Fei was originally from Taiwan and but had relocated to New York. Min-Fei passed away in October 2009 at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca. | |
![]() | Minh Tran | Minh was a loving husband and father of three children ages 6, 3, and 2-years-old. He was a high tech worker and a casualty of the internet bubble bust. Minh had six siblings, but none were a match. He fought Myelodysplastic syndrome since 2003 and became well enough to travel to Vietnam to seek a cure for his disease. He passed away in August 2005. |
| Nick Glasgow | Nick Glasgow was diagnosed with Leukemia in March 2009. His Japanese and Caucasian heritage hampered efforts to find a match. Nick's family and friends put in a tremendous amount of effort in educating the community on the need for ethnic minorities in the National Registry. After being told by doctors that Nick had a 0% chance of finding a marrow/stem cell match, Nick did find his match and received a transplant soon after. Unfortunately, Nick's cancer returned and he passed away in October of 2009 surrounded by his family. His story and spirit have inspired many people. | |

![]() | Prakash Krishnaswami | Prakash Krishnaswami teaches Mechanical Engineering at Kansas State and lives with his wife Sujatha and son Azad (14) in Manhattan, KS. Prakash, known for his vibrant wit, generosity and optimism, has helped numerous students in many ways. Since being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) some months ago, his life is on hold and his future hangs in the balance. Prakash ended up receiving a transplant from an unrelated donor in November 2007. After a tough and brave battle with leukemia, Prakash passed away on October 30, 2008. ![]() | Rajan Vyas | At 7 years old, Rajan was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2005. After his diagnosis, his family and friends organized a massive National campaign to help recruit more Asian donors into the NMDP. Eventually, Rajan found a cord blood donor and received a transplant. He fought very hard after the transplant, but because of further complications, Rajan passed away in November 2005. ![]() | Rajesh Ramanathan | Rajesh 41, is a husband and father of two boys aged 7 and 1. Rajesh was diagnosed with Leukemia (AML) in 2006 and underwenttreatment at CMC Hospital in Vellore for over 6 months. After 3 phases of intense Chemotherapy, an Autologous Bone Marrow transplant was done and he attained full remission towards the end of 2006. He was back at work and was looking forward to rebuilding a future for his family.Unfortunately, towards the end of November 2007, he had a relapse of the leukemia and is back in CMC Vellore for treatment. ![]() | Sameer Bhatia | Sameer Bhatia, was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) in the summer of 2007, which is a cancer of the blood. During his search for a donor he joined forces with Team Vinay and together they were able to register over 24,000 potential donors onto the national registry. In October of 2007, Sameer found a match and underwent a transplant. Although the donor cells were engrafting, Sameer's leukemia came back and he passed away from an infection. His legacy will always be remembered. |

In January, he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia (JMML). Studies have shown that chemo if ineffective in JMML patients and if left untreated, this disease will progress rapidly. Shaun received a transplant early summer 2010. Stan is a native San Franciscan and second generation Chinese American. His parents are from the Guangzhou province in Mainland China. Stan grew up speaking his parent's village dialect 'loung do'. He is a self-employed mortgage broker with over twenty years of experience. His passion is to assist minority and monolingual Chinese first time homebuyers. Stan believes in giving back to the community and has made generous philanthropic donations. Stan has recently passed away at the beginning of July, 2009. ![]() | Vinay Chakravarthy | Vinay is a young 28 year old diagnosed with Leukemia. Vinay grew up in Fremont, California and attended Ardenwood Elementary, Walters Junior High, Kennedy High School, UC Berkeley before moving on to get Masters and MD degrees from Boston University. He was married in 2005 to Rashmi, an aspiring physician from Los Angeles, California. They have lived in Boston since the wedding, where Vinay is a resident in orthopedics at Boston Medical Center. Vinay is known amongst his family and friends as being a kind, honest and loving human being. In the dedicated search to find a match, his team has helped to complete 384 drives and have registered over 20,000 South Asians! Within the search, these drives have started to produce other matches for patients also needing a bone marrow transplant as well. Vinay finally got a transplant on August 24. Vinay gave a brave fight, but his leukemia had relapsed twice. ![]() | Vincent Rodriguez | Vincent was a 24-year-old senior at the University of California Santa Cruz. Vincent was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July of 2009. He was working towards his degree in astrophysics. Vincent hoped to study for a Master's degree and someday work for NASA. Vincent enjoyed hiking, traveling, and staying close with his family. Vincent was given a cord blood transplant which was successful but due to complications, he passed away on April 8th. |
![]() | Vishal Mehta | Vishal is a 30 year old softwre engineer working at Cap Gemini. Aside from work, Vishal enjoys spending time with his wife. He has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. he received a marrow transplant, but experienced complications. Vishal passed away in the wee hours of August 2009. His wife and Family are grief stricken. Please pray for them. Rest in Peace Vishal. |
![]() | Wayne "Louie" Tuaolo | Wayne 'Louie' Evile Maalona Tuaolo was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia at 24 years young. Wayne was born and raised in San Francisco and has helped raise a beautiful son and family. Late July, after a battle with his disease, Louie passed away in the company of his family and friends. Louie left this world wanting to give all that he could give back to his community. He had donated his organs to those who may need help just as he did.
