Cord blood is now becoming a good alternative for a stem cell transplant for individuals who do not find an adult marrow/stem cell donor. For many patients, cord blood transplants are their best hope for treatment.

Private Banking vs. Donating

Private storage means your baby's cord blood is stored for your private use only. Companies that provide this service do charge a collection fee as well as a yearly fee for storing the cord blood.

Donating means your baby's cord blood is stored in a cord blood bank and is available to patients needing stem cell transplants. Donating your baby's cord blood to a public cord blood bank is free. When you donate for public use, the cord blood is available to any patient who needs a transplant. It is not reserved for your family.

Where and How to Donate Cord Blood

To donate your baby's cord blood, contact a cord blood bank to arrange for a kit. If you choose to donate cord blood, you must complete the application to do so BEFORE your 34th week of pregnancy.
