Statistics of the need for transplants:

It is estimated that a marrow or blood cell transplant could benefit more than 10,000 children and adults with life-threatening diseases every year

On average the NMDP (US Registry) facilitates more than 350 transplant each month. In 2008, NMDP facilitated 4,300 marrow and cord blood transplants.

72% of transplants facilitated by the registry serve patients diagnosed with Leukemia, Lymphoma or other blood cancers.

51% of all transplants facilitated by the NMDP registry involves an international donor or recipient.

Searching Statistics:

At any given time, over 6,000 patients from all over the world, and of all ethnicities, are searching the registry for a match

Patients will find a match from their own family only 25-30% of the time. The other 70-75% of the time, patients must find an unrelated donor.

Ethnic Minorities have a 30-40% chance of finding a match from the existing NMDP registry. Caucasians have an 80% chance of finding a match from the existing NMDP registry.

Approximately 50% of all Ethnic Minority donors will NOT push through with donating if called as a possible match for a patient. (whether because they are unreachable, they say “no”, or become medically ineligible). Whereas over 70% of Caucasian donors WILL proceed with donating if called as a possible matched.

Registry Statistics:

The current NMDP registry has more than 7 million registered donors.

BUT…

Only 25% of the current U.S. National Registry consists of Ethnic Minorities (Asian, Pacific Islander, African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Multi-Race)

As of January 2009, these are the current numbers on the NMDP Registry: >
