In 2004, Jonathan was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, prolymphocytic leukemia. Jonathan was in remission while actively looking for a marrow/stem cell match. Unfortunately, none of Jonathan’s siblings were a match and he needed to find an unrelated donor. Since Jonathan was Filipino, his match would have been from someone of the same or similar ethnic background. After a long battle with his cancer, Jonathan passed away in the summer of 2013.
