Michelle Maykin was of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai descent. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February 2007. In response to Michelle’s diagnosis, her network of friends and family created “Project Michelle”. Project Michelle volunteers recruited feverishly throughout the Bay Area, eventually registering over 18,000 people! After months of searching, Michelle received a cord blood transplant in November 2008. Unfortunately, Michelle’s cancer returned, and after a few months of pursuing alternative treatments, Michelle passed away on July 2009. Michelle and her will to live will always be remembered.
