Sonia was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. She was in urgent need for a marrow/stem cell transplant. Sonia’s family and friends formed CURE SONIA, which hosted marrow drives across the nation to increase the number of South Asian donors, not only to help Sonia, but other patients searching for a marrow/stem cell transplant as well. Sonia underwent a cord blood transplant March in 2011. Due to complications, Sonia passed away. She was 24 years old. Below is message from her family:
“We are beyond heartbroken to tell you that after a long and brave struggle of 15 months, our beloved Sonia passed away on 03/11/2012. She was at peace, passed painlessly, and was surrounded by family and friends who loved her beyond all measure. There are no words that can even begin to express the depth of our tragic loss. She will live forever in our hearts and the exceptional joy that she brought to each and every one of us every day of her life will be always with us.We would like to thank each and every one of you for your thoughts and prayers and for your efforts on her behalf during her long struggle. Among her last wishes was that the efforts that went into the Cure Sonia campaign continue and grow in the hope that other lives will be saved. We are all inspired by Sonia’s courage and fortitude in this battle. She persevered, fought patiently, and had an incredible will. The world is a better place because she lived in it and a worse one because she has left it, but her legacy will be eternal in the lives of all of us who knew and loved her.” — Sonia’s Family
